How does the Drug work
◉Diltiazem is a medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and certain heart conditions such as angina (chest pain). Diltiazem belongs to a class of medications called calcium channel blockers.
◉ Calcium channel blockers work by blocking the influx of calcium ions into smooth muscle cells and cardiac muscle cells, which reduces the force of heart contractions and dilates blood vessels, resulting in a decrease in blood pressure.
◉ Diltiazem specifically works by blocking the L-type calcium channels found in the heart and blood vessels. This action reduces the amount of calcium that enters heart muscle cells and blood vessels, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle cells in the blood vessels and decreased heart rate, which helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the workload on the heart.
◉ Diltiazem also has antiarrhythmic properties, meaning it can help regulate abnormal heart rhythms by slowing the electrical conduction of the heart.
