How does the Drug work
◉Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) is an anthelmintic drug used to treat infections caused by certain parasitic worms such as Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Onchocerca volvulus. DEC works by paralyzing and killing the adult worms and microfilariae (immature worms) in the bloodstream and tissues.
◉ The exact mechanism of action of DEC is not fully understood, but it is thought to involve interference with the metabolism and energy production of the worms. DEC also activates the host’s immune response, which helps in eliminating the dead and dying parasites.
◉ DEC is usually given as a single dose, and the effects may take several weeks to manifest, as it takes time for the body to clear the dead parasites. DEC is generally considered safe, but it can cause side effects such as fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rash in some people.
